OfflineCritique Manchester siberians
Siberian Husky
A difficult time of years for coats and I made allowances for this. There was rather a mix of types and some would have gone higher had they not been held back by being either to heavy or soft. Encouraging to see so many young handlers in the breed.

Boston Ch Show
4th January 2018
Siberian Husky
It is always the greatest honour to judge my own breed. This is not the highest entry I have ever judged, but I was fortunate to have much quality to assess and thank you to all the exhibitors for bringing their dogs along. The bitches were particularly strong. First and foremost a judge should be able to clearly distinguish a breed through its general characteristics – with no extremes. In recent years this has become more of a challenge with all sorts of types, but a Siberian Husky should first and foremost look like a Siberian Husky and no other type of Nordic sled dog used (or not) for pulling a sled/rig. Then we are looking for those constructional features that make it able to do the task it was created for and the physical features that enable it to survive in its country of origin. I am also looking for condition – body and muscle. I unfortunately have to report that some dogs ruined their chances through lack of conditioning – and I don’t mean the normal you see when dogs lose coat. Some were also exhibited in filthy condition and smelt and quite frankly that is an insult to both the judge and the breed. That said, there were many who presented their dogs in the highest order (in and out of coat), as should be expected at a show. There were some great dogs here – some that will I’m sure go on to make their mark in the history books in time. The puppy bitches were a delight and I was pleased with both of my final line ups. The normal problems were noted such as open angles and less than ideal movement. I also noticed that there were more short croups and high set tails than I remember in the past. Judging our breed now is one of making compromises, but, for me, good construction and movement will always be paramount in a working breed. Thank you to all who entered. It is always enjoyable, and an honour to judge your dogs.
Minor Puppy Dog (5/1)
1st Thomas’ Eversepp Monnet of Sledsuka. Attractive young boy who was well presented. Nicely chiselled head with correct balance of skull to muzzle. Muzzle not too snipy. Eyes good for shape and set. Ears looking rather large at present, but ok for shape and set. Neck is long enough with slight arch. Balanced angles fore and aft. Looking high in lower leg, but this will balance as chest drops and widens. Topline firm with slight arch over loins. Good tail set and croup. Good fox brush. Pasterns slightly sloping and hocks low to ground. Promising young dog who needs to develop in substance and muscle. Moved soundly.
2nd: Tinker’s Zaltana Heartbreaker Kid at Lolotea (Imp Pol). Very different type to 1st. More foxy expression than 1st, with lovely eyes for set and shape. Definitely a cheeky expression. Ears well furred could be taller as they look a bit small at present. Neck a tad short at present and shoulder a little steep. Upper arm ok for length and return., Ok for bone. Pasterns slightly sloping. Preferred proportions of 1st, as this boy looks a little square at the moment. Topline firm. Nice croup and tailset. Good turn of stifle. Hocks low to ground. Free enough in gait, but crabbed somewhat going away.
3rd: Wakker’s Barking Brooks Mountain Mist at Ceannbeinne
Puppy Dog (1)
1st Ashcroft’s Amical Smile N’Wave for Zanjelic. A big boy for 9months. Handsome, masculine head with lovely almond eyes and set obliquely giving a typical expression. Good balance of skull to muzzle. Stop ok. Well set ears. Neck of good length with slight arch. Well laid shoulders and good return of upper arm which was also of correct length. Ok for bone. Chest quite mature for age, but was of correct depth and width. Correct length of lower leg. Ribs carried well back. Topline firm with slight arch over the loin. Good turn of stifle. Tail set good and carried in a nice sickle curve on the move. Good fox brush. Hocks tad long. Moved with good reach and drive. Promising boy who just needs to refine down a tad. So well handled and presented in high order. BPD
Junior Dog (3,0)
1st Sargent’s Hushwing Wezztlee with Keriquel. Rather large for my preference, but what a gorgeous young dog this is. His outline immediately catches the eye with his lovely arched neck and lovely flowing lines. Nothing jars the eye which is the sign of a good one. Masculine head with a fair width to skull, which is well balanced with his size. Skull and muzzle well balanced with moderate stop. Lovely eyes for shape and set giving a typical expression. Ears are high set, alert and of the correct shape and width. Lovely neck leading into well laid shoulders. Excellent length of upper arm which angles back very well. Good pasterns and feet. Chest still needs to drop and mature, which is correct for his age. Nice long ribcage. Topline firm with slight arch over the loin. Excellent turn of stifle with hocks well set. Croup ok, tail carried correctly on the move. Feet ok. Good bone. Nothing weedy and wimpy here! Somewhat out of coat. Superb mover displaying lightfooted and effortless strides and, unlike many others, so sound out and back. Despite the fact that he obviously still needs to mature, I had no hesitation in awarding this young dog the CC. Class and quality in abundance. CC.
2nd: Leich & Koop’s Forstal’s Inola. Preferred the size of this dog to 1st, but he really was determined not to play the game. Developing well. A most attractive head with that lovely mischievous expression. Beautiful eyes for shape and set. Good balance of skull to muzzle with moderate stop. Neck not as good in length and arch as 1st. Angles well balanced, but again not quite as good as 1st. Good bone. Pasterns very slight slope. Topline level with slight arch over the loin. Loins firm and strong. Tail set a tad high. Excellent fox brush. Moved very erratically. Well muscled.
3rd: Simms’ Arcticskies Thunder Snow.
Yearling Dog (4,0) A very difficult class.
1st Cooper’s Janskcoo’s Fortitude JW. Really excellent for type. Head is masculine enough. Eyes are very good for shape and set. Good skull to muzzle ratio. High set ears of excellent shape. They were well furred too. Neck a little short. I felt him rather upright in shoulder and upper arm could have better length and return and this showed for me today in a hackney style front action. Good depth of chest and excellent lower leg length. Very well proportioned in height to length. Topline slopes away too much for me. Loins are firm and strong. Good croup and excellent turn of stifle that just doesn’t quite balance with the front. Tail set and carried well. Good fox brush. Sound out and back, not covering the ground in front as I would like.
2nd: Williams’ Sibersong’s Dark Sovereign for Salazka. Such a difficult dog to assess because of his colouring, which is very attractive. He has good eyes for shape and set and good high set ears of the correct size. Muzzle is correct and skull is of correct width. Not as typical in expression for me as 1st. Neck ok for length and displayed a moderate arch. Balanced angulation fore and aft, but would prefer more both ends. Chest good for width and depth and ribs carried well back. Strong firm topline. Tail set on a little high. Good fox brush. Moved soundly, but didn’t really cover much ground today.
3rd: Tinker’s Zaltana Midnight Express at Lolotea (Imp Pol)
Post Graduate Dog (1,0)
1st: Grisbrooke’s Azgard Spindrift. Such an attractive dog. Masculine head with almond shaped, oblique set eyes. Ears slightly taller than width at base. Good balance of skull to muzzle. Foxy expression. Good length to neck. Balanced angles fore and aft. Good depth of chest and correct length of ribcage. Lower leg length is correct being slightly more than depth of chest. Strong topline with slight arch over the loin. Croup rather steep and tail set on a tad high. Did display an effortless side gait, but he really weaved in front. Ok behind. Needs more substance.
Limit Dog (2,0)
1st: Downey & Last’s Snoqualmie Jupiter Makanni. Nice for type. Eyes are rather full and level set. Ears ok for size and shape but do look a tad bonneted. Neck of correct length with slight arch. Balanced angles fore and aft which were superior to 2nd. Good depth and width of ribcage. Topline ok. Loins firm. Needs more croup and tail set is rather high. Excellent coat and condition. Moved soundly. Well handled.
2nd: Yerrill’s Alepenkye Fruit Loops. A very attractive boy who has gorgeous eyes of really good almond shape and are set so well. High set ears which are of good shape and well furred. Rather sharp features and appearing slightly too long in muzzle. Lacks underjaw and his bite is undershot. Angles balanced both ends but would prefer more. Has sufficient depth of chest and ribcage is carried well back. Topline is strong with slight arch over the loins. Good proportions of height to length. Rather steep in croup. Moved erratically on the day.
Open Dog (6,1)
1st James’ Amical Kamdor. Winner of a class where all were very different for type. This dog is of an excellent type with a lovely masculine, but not heavy, head. Lovely almond shaped eyes with the desired oblique set that helps promote the typical expression. Great ears for shape and set and well furred. Well chiselled foreface. Neck of moderate length with slight arch. Well laid shoulders and good length and return of upper arm. Correct length of lower leg. Pasterns slightly sloping. Good depth of ribcage, but carrying too much substance on the day. Topline firm enough with very slight rise over the loins. Again, a little too well covered round the mid-drift on the day. Sufficient croup. Excellent turn of stifle and nice low set hocks. Lovely fox brush and very good feet. Not really a ring that suited this dog. He moved soundly but didn’t move out as his construction would suggest he can. Rather frustrating, but still close to the top awards.
2nd: Redwood’s Rigrunner Jubilee Flotilla. This boy always seems to go on improving. Pushed the winner all the way here. Head is very nice with correct eye shape and set. Ears correct for size and shape. Masculine expression. Neck just about long enough. Not quite the angulation of 1st but is very well balanced and superior to many. Rather 1:1 in length of lower leg to depth of chest. Pasterns sloping. Feet just a little flat. Rib cage long enough. Loins appear a little too arched for my preference. Good turn of stifle and low set hocks. Croup a little too short and tail set a tad high. Handled the ring well moving very soundly. Well muscled and handled.
3rd: Grisbrooke’s Ch Azgard Glock
Veteran Dog (2,0)
1st Redwood’s Ch Rigrunner Slider. An old friend of my mine and looking as typy as ever. Such a quality white boy. Beautiful masculine head. Super eyes for shape and set. Excellent high ear set which are good for shape and size, also well furred. Well balanced through skull and muzzle with moderate stop without being overdone. Excellent neck leading into well laid shoulders. Very good upper arm for length and angulation. Correct length of lower leg being slightly more than depth of chest. Nicely sloping, flexible pasterns. Good depth of chest with ribcage carried well back. Moderate tuck up. Excellent turn of stifle with low set hocks. Croup sufficient and tail carried well on the move if a little sparse of hair today. Topline just a tad sloping. Great mover. Pipped by the younger dog today who just looked that bit more alert and on form. Super boy. RCC.
2nd: Winer & Unwin’s Nashanessen Dirty Harry at Snowtrekka JW. A well built dog all through if a little big for my preference, but everything is in proportion. He wasn’t really putting his heart into proceedings today. He has a good head with nice almond shaped, oblique set eyes, Well chiselled foreface, and good expression. Ear set was ok when he put them up. Ok in body and moves pretty soundly, particularly in profile where he covered a lot of ground.
Good Citizen D/B (1,0)
1st Goodwin’s Amical Tikia JW. A sound, standard fitting red bitch who was in the most superfluous, muscular condition – the best of the day! Head is feminine with a foxy expression. Eyes are almond shaped and set obliquely. Ears are of correct size, but perhaps just set a shade too far back on the skull. Neck appears a little short. Moderate angulation fore and aft. Just about ok in length of body. Good pasterns and hocks and lovely feet. Strong, firm topline. Croup slopes nicely. Moves very soundly in all directions. So well presented and handled – an example to many.
Minor Puppy Bitch (2,1)
1st Goodwin’s Valkyrie Siwash Legend (Imp CZ). If I could have taken one home today, this would have been the one. Here, I’m sure we have a star of the future. This young bitch typifies a quality Siberian puppy! Super feminine head with gorgeous eyes. Excellent foxy, mischievous expression. High set, alert ear set. Good neck. Excellent angulation fore and aft. On the smaller side at present, but everything is in proportion. Good pasterns and feet. Excellent tail set and carriage. Absolutely super double coat. When she gets going, she displays an outstanding gait in profile and out and back. Missed out for best puppy by a hairs breath on performance really, with the more mature girl- who is also beautiful- just edging her on the final move. Good luck with her. Gorgeous.
Puppy Bitch (3,1) Two nice pups here
1st Porritt’s Amical Super Duper. And she sure is! How nice to judge some quality youngsters. This is another sure-fire Champion. Quality all the way from the tip of her nose to the tip of her tail. One of the best I judged today. Eye catching outline, which, similar to my DCC winner, just all flows smoothly. Super feminine head with excellent eye shape and set. Good skull to muzzle ratio and moderate stop. Well chiselled foreface giving that foxy expression. High set ears of correct size and shape. Super neck of correct length and slight arch. Well laid shoulder. Upper arm could angle back a tad more, but she does have a tendency to stand too far forward which doesn’t help. Good proportions of height to length and lower leg. Well ribbed with ribs carried well back. Not too long in loin. Strong topline. Excellent turn of stifle. Low set hocks. Tail set on a tad too high. Moves with elegance covering the ground with ease. Don’t take her too fast! Beautiful bitch. Pushed very hard for the CC. Lost out on maturity. BP
2nd: Brown’s Deshka’s Cassiar Dyr For Polarcreek. Another attractive girl. Feminine head. Eyes are almond shaped and set obliquely. Typical expression. Ears set high but look rather large at present. Neck ok for length. Shoulders not as well angulated as 1st and upper arm is a little upright at present. Pasterns need more slope. Body developing well. Moderate turn of stifle. Tail a little high set. Good fox brush. Hocks low to ground. Great coat and condition. Moves out well to show a lightfooted gait. Not the length of stride of 1st.
Junior Bitch (4,2)
1st Bowering & Evans’ Penkhala’s Kaska. Head looks a little out of proportion with her body at present. Feminine enough. Eyes of nice shape and set. Ears rather large and could be set closer together. She has a good neck when she’s not looking directly at her handler. Stretch her out in front! Well laid shoulders and upper arm angles back enough. Good bone lengths here. Correct depth and width of chest, but obviously still developing. Good length of ribcage. Strong loins of correct length. Topline firm with slight rise over the loins. Croup slopes nicely and tail is well set. Nice slope to pasterns. Rather long in hocks which tend to tuck under her too. Rather too long in lower leg giving quite a lot of daylight under her. Moves very well with nice length of stride and displays good ground coverage.
2nd: Jones & Mihulka’s Shaytaan’s Upyours at Icynights (Imp Can). Displaying good type through the head which is well balanced in skull and muzzle. Refined and foxy with typical expression. Ear set high. Eyes a tad full but set very well. Neck ok. Shoulders and upper arm form a more open angle than I prefer. Refined bone. Looking rather long legged, but she is young and has lots of maturing to do. Pasterns upright at present. Body length is ok and in proportion to height. Standing a little up behind on the day. Croup slopes nicely. Moves ok out and back. Would prefer more length of stride.
Special Yearling Bitch (2,0)
1st Cooper’s Janskcoo’s Strength N’Honour JW. A real stunner here. Top quality and one I would expect to gain her title. Cracking head. Super feminine bitch without weakness. Lovely almond shaped eyes which are set obliquely. Good balance of skull to muzzle with moderate stop. Super ear set. Just the right length of neck with a lovely arch. Very well laid shoulders and form a very good angle with the upper arm. Correct bone lengths. Lovely depth and development of chest. Perfect length of lower leg. Sloping pasterns. Feet too flat. Ribcage well formed and carried well back. Good firm strong loins. Lovely topline with slight rise over the loin. Ideal turn of stifles. Correct length and slope to croup. Good fox brush. Low set hocks. Lovely effortless mover covering lots of ground. Could be a fraction tidier out and back. One that I considered strongly for the CC, but she became a little agitated and couldn’t then compete with the others on the move. Her day will come! Lovely.
2nd: Jones’ Azgard Bloom. Completely different type to 1st. Attractive head with correct eyes for shape and set. Ears rather large and tend to bonnet a little. Rather long through the muzzle. Neck ok for length. Balanced angles all through, but more upright than 1st. Very steep pasterns. Lower leg is too long for my preference, but this may appear better as her chest drops and develops. Strong topline with slight arch over the loin. Tail set on high needing more croup. Looking in really good condition and showed herself off to perfection. Moves very soundly from all angles.
Post Graduate Bitch (4,1)
1st: Ankers’ Sybasprinter Cosmic Dancer. This piebald girl took my eye as she came in the ring and proved to be a good winner here. On the smaller end of the standard, but everything in perfect proportion. Lovely feminine head with gorgeous oblique set almond shaped eyes. Excellent foxy expression. Great proportion of skull to muzzle. Moderate stop. Lovely dark pigment. Very well built with excellent shoulders and upper arm and well balanced at the rear with nice turn of stifles. Good width and depth of chest. Ribs carried well back. Strong loins. Lovely topline with slight rise over the loins. Tail a little high set. Good pasterns and hocks. Feet nice for size and shape. Moves with ease in a lightfooted manner. Not quite the length of stride and elegance of my main winners on the day.
2nd: Robinson’s Norste Zinnia Qannik Among Rigrunner. Good almond shaped eyes which are set obliquely. A tad long in the muzzle and perhaps a little narrow through the skull. Lips are tight and she has a typical expression. Neck ok for length. Not as well angulated all through as 1st, but is well balanced both ends. Lots of maturing to do through the body. Firm topline with slight arch over the loins. Out of coat on the day. Moves soundly.
3rd: Browns’ Polarcreek Alatna
Limit Bitch (8,1) A super quality class, where all my top 5 could easily swap places and go on to win green cards. A pleasure to judge.
1st: Sargent’s Keriquel Aqualight. A superb quality bitch who was naked on the day so hiding nothing. Eye catching outline with super flow and angles. Lovely quality head which was feminine enough without weakness. Lovely almond shaped eyes and set obliquely to give that typical Sibe expression. Outstanding body for make and shape. Love her angulation with well laid shoulders, correct length and return of upper arm matched perfectly at the rear with slope of pelvis, upper and lower thighs. Just fabulous. Lovely depth and width of chest without being overdone and showing no signs of weakness. Good proportion of lower leg to depth of chest and height to length. Pasterns are sloping and hocks are set low enough to ground. Good slope to croup and tail set on well. Good fox brush despite being naked. Topline strong with slight arch over the loin, though can sometimes stand making it appear to slope a tad too much. Great mover. Strong from any angle and so lightfooted and ground covering. My mind was set that the CC was hers, but she just threw it away at the last getting a little agitated by the noise and surroundings. What a beauty. A delight to judge. Should gain her title with ease. RCC
2nd: Wakker’s Icynights Sparkle in the Mist at Ceannabeinne. Another good quality feminine bitch who has it all. You know, you can tell this bitch is a Siberian Husky and reminds me so much of some of the old Zoox dogs. Absolutely scrumptious head which I slightly preferred over 1st – so feminine and foxy with perfect eyes for shape and set. Lovely tight lips and balance to head. High set ears which are lovely for shape, set and are well furred. Correct length of neck. Shoulders are well laid and upper arm angles back nicely. More mature in body that 1st. Good depth of and width of ribcage which was carried well back. Enough slope to pasterns. Correct underline with moderate tuck up. Good turn of stifles. Croup ok and tails set and carriage is typical. Gave ground to 1st today as she was very unsettled and not moving with the scope and freedom of 1st. Also felt 1st was more up on her toes and alert than 2nd. Another who should gain her title.
3rd; Leich & Koops’ Forstal’s Kittila. Another high quality bitch.
Open (6,0)
1st Robinson & Platt’s Ch Rigrunner Jubilee Flypast. The standard says a Siberian should be medium sized, quick and light on feet, graceful in action with a well furred body. Proportions reflecting a basic balance of power speed and endurance. So, here I found it. A bitch I have judged and admired before and today looked magnificent. Fully mature and looking the full picture. Lovely feminine head without being overly refined. Good balance of skull to muzzle. Eyes are of a lovely almond shape and are set obliquely. Ears are correct for shape. To be critical could be set a bit higher, but she doesn’t help herself here by loving all around her. Beautiful flowing outline where nothing jars the eye, everything flowing through without any excess or extremes. Neck is of ideal length with good arch. Very well laid shoulders and super length and return of upper arm. Chest of ideal proportions for width and depth and carried well back through the ribs. Moderate loins which are firm and well muscled. Strong topline. Excellent turn of stifles. Really good slope to croup and tail is set nicely. In superfluous coat and condition and looking every inch the piece today. Moves with ease and freedom and covered more ground today than any other bitch here. Just lovely to watch. Had to pull out all the stops to beat some superb bitches here and she never put a foot wrong. Another that was a delight to judge. CC and BOB.
2nd: Jones’ & Mihulka’s Ch Icynights Too Hot To Handle JW. It’s an honour when people enter their quality dogs for you to assess, and here was another. A bitch like the 1st that I have admired before. Typical head with really mischievous expression. Lovely almond shaped eyes. Ears are set high and of lovely size and shape. They are also well furred. Neck ok for length. Good angulation all through. Nice for size and bone – definitely moderate as the standard asks for. Correct slope to pasterns. Feet of nice shape. Chest has good depth and width and extends back enough. Loins firm and strong. A very slight hint of a dip behind the withers on the day on the stand but didn’t really show too much on the move where she covers the ground with consummate ease, if not a bit too fast, which can make her over extend. Slight slope to croup. Tail carriage good on the move. Not too sure of herself today. A super bitch who continues to display her many virtues.
3rd: Smiths’ Amical Snow White
Veteran Bitch (2,0)
1st: Bowering and Evans’ Ch Penkhalas Kyra. A good honest bitch at the smaller end of the standard. Everything is in proportion. She has femininity but with the required strength. Very standard fitting head with lovely almond shaped eyes. Ear set is perfect and she is always so alert! Great angles all through. Body is good for depth and width and her proportions for her size are excellent. Excellent topline with slight arch over the loin. Super croup and tail set. Lovely fox brush. I just feel her hocks extend slightly too far behind her. Moves well in profile and is as sound as they come out and back. Very well handled and presented.
2nd: Jones’ Azgard Susitna. A quality bitch at the taller end of the standard who still has so many virtues on show at her age. Feminine head. Tad long through the muzzle compared to skull. Moderate stop. Lovely eyes for shape and set. Really nice arch to neck without being excessive. Lovely angulation fore and aft. Very well proportioned. Good chest for width and depth. Lovely croup and tailset. Great fox brush. Moves so freely belying her years. Great condition. Unlucky to meet 1st.

OfflineResults for Crufts 2018 - Siberian Husky Judge: MRS P M EVANS
It was an honour to be invited to judge at this most illustrious of dog shows. I really did enjoy my day
and give my thanks to my stewards for their hard work and support. It was equally an honour - perhaps
even more so - to be supported by so many exhibitors and my thanks to all who travelled from far and
wide on a Thursday.
I tend to reinforce my critiques with a synopsis and overview of the entry and, indeed, my thoughts on
the way our most beautiful breed is trending. Of course, with the number of dogs entered extremes will
be experienced, but on the whole I found quality triumphed over quantity, with some quite stunning dogs
being exhibited. That said, I did have some concerns and a surprise or two along the way to Best of
Breed.
Preparation - of course you should do your best to show your dog. What a waste to leave your dog the way it came in from the race trails, but the breed should be able to withstand snow and cold in the same way a duck’s feathers repel water - a smooth outer coat for protection with an undercoat for support and warmth. My commiserations to those who found their beloved’s coat disappearing down the bath plughole the day before the Great Event. Crufts is not scheduled at the best time of the year for Siberians and I did try to see through these deficits, but sometimes this was not always possible and higher placings could have been gained on another day. I could not, however, overlook incorrect coat preparation. The coat should not stand proud thus allowing the elements to reach a dog’s skin, risking a fatal conclusion in its home environment. In line with fit-for-function the Standard calls for the coat to be “somewhat smooth-lying”. I, therefore, judged accordingly.
Weight. The Siberian Husky is listed in the KC’s Breed Watch programme for concerns regarding both
under and overweight. The general supposition is that the thicker-set animals tend to be heavier than
their more slightly-built cousins, which is why I was totally amazed to find this was clearly not the case.
The Standard calls for “muscle firm and well developed, no excess weight”. Surely this is a clear
definition? Overweight is hard to disguise and, indeed, not desirable in a working breed, but to find
hidden under some highly coiffured coats dogs that were on the edge of skinny gave me equal cause
for concern. A Siberian should be lean and well-muscled, but for these unfortunate individuals this did
not seem to be the case. Both extremes in weight will not help a dog achieve its best in the show ring
and, indeed, cannot be considered fit-for-function.
I was surprised to observe a definite lack of single tracking during the day and, as has been a recent
trend, lack of correct angulation. Short upper arms resulting in straight angulation, often creating lack
of balance and proportion. I appreciate everyone has their “ideal” Siberian which may not entirely tally
with that of others - judging dogs is after all an exercise in one person's opinion on the day. I am
concerned, however, that breeders are paying more attention to striving to achieve “their type” without
appreciation of the need to consider the acknowledged KC Breed Standard. The Siberian UK Standard
is on the whole based on conformation to create a dog capable of its work, whilst recording what
differentiates this breed from other pedigree dogs. The correct Siberian should have “medium” as its
axiom. When breeding we should all remember conformation and balance are aspects that should go
hand-in-hand to produce this most elegant and graceful member of the canine world which, when
correctly built, will create the basis for a dog capable of its work. No one should expect to win over others
with an inferior example of their “type”.
But …. All is not doom-and-gloom. As they say, the future is bright! I was delighted to award Reserve
CC’s to two youngsters, which gives hope for the Siberian Husky in this country. I believe both have
glittering futures ahead of them but, unsurprisingly in a breed which should mature so slowly, once
again the overall accolade went to a Veteran who stole the day and should be an example to all those
aspiring to realise success.
Again, my thanks to all who made my last judging appointment such a memorable event. Happy memories of some wonderful dogs !

2nd 2191 MRS E ASHCROFT - AMICAL SMILE N' WAVE FOR ZANJELIC
Very characteristic red and white baby. Good length to height ratio, he needs to tighten up on movement, which should come with maturity.
3rd 2330 MRS K TINKER - ZALTANA HEARTBREAKER KID AT LOLOTEA (IMP POL)
Heavier boned than Nos. 1 and 2, this classically marked youngster is nicely constructed, but like No.2 needs to tighten up to improve his drive.

maintaining a good level topline. Handled to his best and a well deserved RCC.

Another promising junior Standard-fitting Siberian. Lovely head and expression. Covered less ground than the winner of the class, but another one to watch in the future.

Classic young man, thoroughly enjoying his day out. Fabulous head, superb balance front

time of the line-up and lost drive at the vital moment. Very much one to watch for the future.
2nd 2340 MR D & MRS C WILLIAMS - SIBERSONG'S DARK SOVEREIGN FOR SALAZKA (IMP

Should this colour be called ‘heritage black’? Reminiscent of old sled dog photographs, this
young gentleman displayed all the attributes required of a modern-day Siberian. Close to No.
1 in most aspects, standard-fitting, and a pleasure to watch as he floated round the ring.
3rd 2216 MISS J COOPER - JANSKCOO'S FORTITUDE JW
I have admired this young dog for some time, but sadly out of coat and up against strong

What a stunner! Where has this lady been hiding? At 10.5 years old she proves what a
fantastic enduring breed the Siberian Husky is. Clearly refusing to accept her status as a
Veteran and shown in excellent condition. To write about her would be to list the Breed
Standard verbatim. This was her day and she stole the show. Was there a class “the dog the judge would most like to take home”? She would have won that one too …

OfflineWELKS. CH. SHOW. 28.04.18.
SIBERIAN HUSKY.
I would like to thank the WELKS Show Committee for inviting me to judge, I was absolutely delighted to receive such a fantastic entry, both numerically, and such amazing quality. Thank you to the many exhibitors who entered. Most dogs were presented in excellent condition and all had super temperaments. I was really impressed with the quality of the entry, and numerous really good dogs went down the line, as in some instances I was splitting hairs. We had a huge ring which enabled me to really assess movement, and was pleased to find numerous with the correct movement which really personifies the Siberian Husky, neck stretched forward in line with back when gaiting on a loose lead round he ring. This was definitely the highest quality entry I have judged for some years. Thankyou has to go to my two excellent stewards who kept everything flowing throughout the day, and made my job so much easier, absolutely first class.
Veteran.D. 5(3)
1. Reeves’ Spirell's Alexei at Korsvig, 7 yrs old . Everything to like about this chap. Super head with correct ear set and eye shape and set. Well angulated throughout, with level topline and slight rise over loin. Correct tuck up. Well set on tail carried in graceful sickle. Super movement .Quality boy.
2. Keens’ Nashanessen's Stanley, 8yrs, and another lovely boy. Similar attributes to 1st, but slightly more upright in upper arm, not giving him quite the reach of 1st. Still a quality exhibit, and most attractive fellow.
3. Crowther’s Prince of the Five Valleys of Kobuk.
Puppy.D. 7.
1st.Richardson’s Salazkas Thunderbird, super monochromatic boy, of great promise. Correct foxy head well proportioned. Correct ear set when he uses them, and eyes correct for shape and set and very mischievous looking. Correct arch to neck and upper arm and shoulder well angled. Height to length ratio correct. Would not want him any taller. Correctly set and carried tail. Should have a good future. Really promising
2.Nicholl's, Arctictrek's Spook's Treat at Targatrail, nice make and shape, and took my eye. Quite different type to 1st, but very standard fitting. Foxy head , with well set almond shaped eyes and correctly set ears. One eye rim lacks pigmentation. Correct angulation fore and aft with taunt loins for one so young. Perfect sweep to stifle and well let down hocks. Correct tail set and fox brush held in sickle curve.
3. Anderson, Azgard Zen to Uriakin.
Junior. D.
1. Ashcroft’s Amical Smile N'Wave for Zanjelic, standing alone. Presented in superb condition. Very handsome boy, on the more compact end of the standard. Attractive head of moderate proportions. Excellent ear set and eye shape. Very evenly balanced would prefer slightly more length of leg to body depth. Super double coat. Well handled.
Yearling.D. 7
1. Sargent’s Hushwing Wezztlee with Keriquel, absolutely super exhibit. Would not want him any taller, but he has immense quality. Super foxy but masculine head with close set ears of correct size. Perfect eyes for shape and set. Reachy neck with well laid shoulders. Correct width to front and correct length and angle to upper arm and shoulder. Height to length ratios spot on with correct tuck up. Croup of correct angle and slope with lovely brush tail, carried in graceful sickle curve. Feet oval and good thick pads. His angulation showed off to perfection when he powered gracefully but powerfully round the ring, with excellent reach and drive. Quality exhibit. R.D.C.C.
2. Cooper’s Janskcoo's Fortitude. JW., Close up to one. Just not holding his topline today. Correct head with well set ears and eyes. Angulation fore and aft spot on. Very standard fitting throughout. Moved with typical movement coming and going and really covered the ground. Showing much promise. Quality lad.
3. Biddlecombe’s Tsaritsa Veyron.
P.G.D.8.
1.Leich &Koops’ Forstal's Inola, very standard fitting Sibe , I really liked him. Top quality. Very foxy head with lovely expression. Absolutely correct ratios throughout, with spot on angulation. Excellent front which matches rear angles , this showed in his excellent light footed movement , and correct reach and drive, so typical, and a joy to watch.
2.Amphlett&Sym’s Eskamara Five Star, lovely pale red of quality, just a tad shy. Close up to 1. Really liked him. Excellent well-proportioned head with foxy expression. Angled well through upper arm and shoulder. Reachy neck and level topline. Slight rise over loin and correct croup. Good brush tail. When settled moved well. Just needs to gather confidence for top honours.
3. Walker’s Skimarque Tempest Nico.
L.D. 6.
1. Robertson’s Chatanika's Wild Whistler, have judged him before and he did not disappoint. Such a correctly balanced dog of quality, very standard fitting. Well proportioned foxy head, with lovely expression. Good ratios throughout, with correct angulation. Correct height to length. Well set tail carried correctly. Well let down hocks and slight slope to pasterns. Correct feet. Moved with free flowing powerful movement with plenty of reach and drive. Considered him for top honours. Just so many good exhibits today., unlucky.
2. Walker’s Shaytaan's Doctor Watson at Ceannabeinne. (Imp Can)
White, of good quality just very fidgety today, so quite hard to assess. Lovely shape and well angulated. Good foxy head, and well laid shoulders. Nice arched neck and correct topline. Pasterns rather long . His movement won him second place. So well muscled and in great condition.
3. Anderson’s Shamsky Ee'lahn at Uriakin.
O.D. 10 (1).
1. James’s Amical Kamdor, he came and he conquered! Absolutely stunning. Screams Sibe. Text book model. Really could not fault him. Superb foxy head with correct almond eyes and obliquely set. Good ear set. Long neck and well laid shoulders. Correct width to front and well angled upper arm. Height to length ratios spot on. Bone absolutely perfect for size. Level back with slight rise to loin area. Croup of correct length and slope . Super brush tail carried in a graceful sickle. Perfect slight slope to pasterns which I found quite rare. Low set hocks and correct feet. Movement to die for. So well handled. Top notch. DCC .
2. Biddlecombe’s Korsvig's Cooper at Tsaritsa, a real fidget today, but oozing quality. Super head type, real foxy but still masculine expression. Angulation of fore and aft well balanced. Would prefer better slope to croup which would enable better tail carriage, I have to mention his absolutely perfect double coat , which many Sibes had years ago but not so many currently. So thick and plush but still not obscuring outline. When he eventually settled moved with great reach and drive. Super boy. Unlucky to meet first!
3. Redwood’s Rigrunner Jubilee Flotilla.
S.B.D. 2.
1. Lapteva &Troskot’sHeartbreaker Kid Legend of the Spirit in Ambersnow (imp Poland)
A heavier boned dog in pristine condition. Pale red and good double coat. Would prefer more foxy head but eye and ear set correct. Needs more leg length to body depth, front a little wide. Back lacking rise over loin. Good tail set and lovely brush which was carried well. Moved precisely round ring. Well handled.
2. Walker’s Skimarque Tempest Nico, nice boy a tad feminine. Very attractive with foxy head. Quite well balanced body, with moderate angles. Moving closely behind today.
S.B.B. 2(1)
1.Toomer, Alistair's Ruby Red for Shaali, nice little red and white girl with a foxy head and correct eye shape and ear set. Angulation balanced. Moved very well round the ring holding topline. Best S.B.
V.B. 10(2)
1. Stanier’s Arctictrek's Daisy Duke, I loved this girl, 10 years old and looking great. Very standard fitting , of a type which is more rare in the ring today, being moderate but still completely balanced, with everything where it should be. Fox like head with really lovely expression, correct almond obliquely set eyes and perfect triangular ears . Excellently angulated throughout, which showed in her true light footed ground covering movement.
2. Bowering & Evans’ Ch. Penkhala's Kyra, 9 year old of top quality, not quite on her usual form today. Lower end of standard, but so well balanced, angulation and ratios spot on. Very appealing typical head. Unfortunately, showing a rather sloping topline today, not helped by the way she stands looking up at handler.
3.Robinson’s Rigrunner Clamshell.
P.B.(7)
1. Goodwin’s Valkyrie Siwash Legend, (imp CZ), 11month monochromatic pup, of great quality. On the bottom end of the height standard but absolutely correct. Superb foxy head, with just about enough stop. Triangular ears of correct height and width. Strong neck for one so young leading to spot on shoulder placement which was totally balanced with length and slope of upper arm. Strong back with correct length of ribcage, height to length ratio fine. Good oval feet and slight slope to pasterns. Lovely fox brush tail held correctly. Movement to die for. Handler got best out of her. This was a top quality class. One to watch! Later Best Puppy.
2. Cunningham’s Winterblaze's Goingloopy, another super pup, of good quality. Not quite so together as first today, but potential for top honours. Quite fidgety today, but only 8 months. Lovely standard fitting girl, with foxy head and correct angulation throughout. When she settled showed really excellent light footed ground covering movement. Another one which should have a good future.
3.Heaton’s Tovarysh Starina at Volkaden. Another really nice pup.
J.B. 9(2) Top quality class.
1.Brown’s Deshka's Cassiar Dyr for Polarcreek, Super bitch. Loved her outline. Head needs to mature as she is only young, but fine for age. Quite a text book example with correct angles and ratios. Perfect size bone, and good topline. Movement excellent, really covering the ground. Very good tight oval feet with arched toes, which a lot lack. Perfect tail set and carriage. A real sweety.
2. John's Azgard Kapma for Alepenkye, unluckily to meet winner today. Another quality girl, handled so well. Still quite raw but showing much promise. Head needs to mature . Ear set and eye set correct. Angulation good but a bit narrow in front at moment, this should correct as she matures. A little long in loin, but good slight slope to croup giving good tail carriage. Pasterns looking upright today. Moved really well when she got going. Should do well when it all comes together which I am sure it will. Nice exhibit.
3.Porritt’s Amical Super Duper.
Y.B. 3.
1. Cooper’s Janskcoo's Strength N'Honour. JW.
Quality bitch, super type. Very standard fitting. Perfect head with lovely expression. Well arched neck and correct upper arm and shoulder angulation. Height to length ratios spot on. Firm level topline with taut loin. Correct slight tuck up. Croup slightly sloping and lovely brush tail held correctly. Slightly sloping pasterns, good medium bone, and well let down hocks. Excels in movement. Really liked her, and considered her for RCC.
2. Bowering &Evans’ Penkhala's Kaska, JW, another super girl, close up to first, just not moving as well today, but could easily change places another day. Similar attributes to one. Very standard fitting, as one would expect from this kennel. Beautiful outline, and super coat. One to watch!
3. Anderson’s Azgard Pinkster to Uriakin, another super girl.
P.G.B. 9.
1. Norman’s Skimarque Margarita, a quality bitch, who could easily get over looked. Her colouring sort of blends into the background, which shows how important 'hands on' is! Everything to like about her, very up to standard. Perfect foxy head with super almond eyes and good ear set. Correct leg length to body depth, good arched neck and good width to front. Strong level back , loin could be a tad more taut. Excellent sweep to stifles, and correct slightly sloping pasterns and low set firm hocks. Oval feet and arched toes. Super brush tail held correctly. Movement excellent, when settled. Lovely quality.
2. Robinson’s Norste Zinnia Qannik Among Rigrunner, very out of coat, making head look rather fine, but ratios are correct and eyes perfect shape and set. Excellent angulation throughout. Body ratios spot on. Tail set and carriage correct. When she finally settled moved with lovely light footed movement. Really liked her.
3.March & Smith’s Janskoo Echoes in Eternity.
L.B. 9(2)
1. Walker’s Icynights Sparkle In The Mist at Ceannabeinne, what a stunning perfectly standard fitting bitch with indeed a special Sparkle Loved her last time I judged her , and she is even better now. Such a typical foxy head with perfect eye shape and set giving the correct expression. Thickly furred triangular ears of right size. Arched neck leading to perfectly placed shoulders. Upper arm correctly angled and correct width to front. Back strong and level showing slight loin rise and she has slight tuck up. Correct bone throughout. Not weedy or over boned. Strong parallel front legs with elbows tucked in. Good depth to chest, and nicely flattened ribs. Good slight slope to pasterns and oval feet. Lovely sweep to stifle and strong low set hocks. Good croup and super brush tail held in sickle curve. Correct dense double coat. Absolutely super ground covering stride which was a joy to watch. Really top quality. Hope she makes up soon. Pleased later to award her CC and BOB, over some other top quality dogs.
2. Sargent’s Keriquel Aqualight, another girl oozing quality and unlucky to meet first. Very similar attributes to first, but still maturing. Beautiful fox like head. Lovely arch to neck with excellent angulation throughout. Pasterns slightly upright, but otherwise hard to fault. Super movement , great reach and drive and head well extended giving lovely topline. Pleased to later award her R.C.C. She will definitely go on to win many top awards.
3. Smith’s Amical Kapri. Another lovely girl.
O.B.
1. Robinson’s Rigrunner Diamond Jubilee, such a lovely 5 year old girl with excellent pigment for colouring. Really foxy head and almond eyes. Reachy neck and perfectly laid shoulders and correct slope to upper arm. Body ratios spot on . Well muscled and in great condition, good double coat. Hind quarters evenly matched to front assembly which showed when she powered round the ring. Super.
2. Smith’s Amical Snow White, white in sparkling condition. Unlucky to meet first today. Really liked this standard fitting girl. Very foxy and very well proportioned. Slightly upright in upper arm but good lay to shoulder. Good depth to chest with slightly longer lower legs. Lovely sweep to stifles. Strong hocks and slight slope to pasterns. Good brush tail which was held correctly. Super movement.

SIBERIAN HUSKY
Many thanks to the committee for this my 3rd CC awarding appointment, my lovely stewards for their assistance in keeping the ring in order despite the long day, and to the exhibitors for providing me with some lovely examples of our breed to assess. On the whole the dogs were well-presented with only a few being not quite as clean as I would have expected. Some undercoats were absent, which is to be expected at this time of year however care must be taken to ensure that where change of coat has affected body condition, as can happen with youngsters, rations are amended, and these dogs are allowed to further mature before being shown out of coat. I was also presented with a few dogs that were overweight, which not only affects the overall picture but alters the movement and presents a rolling topline. I am aware the ring surface was not particularly even in parts, but I was disappointed to see the difference in the quality of movement since my last appointment. Several dogs with very wide rear movement and several dogs showing a circular swinging motion when viewed from the front. Short upper arms, heavy bone, short level croups and high tails were also noted in a number of dogs. Consideration needs to be given to the function of our breed, to cover long distances pulling light to medium loads. Bone density, length of loin, set of croup, set of tail and angulation are critical to achieve the effortless single tracking movement that is seen in a correctly constructed Siberian. That said I was very pleased with my winners and placings in limit and open for both sexes could easily be changed around on a different day.
PD (2) 1. Williams Salazka's Newt Scamander - 9 months, black & white, brown eyes, short coupled boy to the lower end of the height range. A stronger head than I would like for his age. Good reach of neck, well laid-back shoulder, good depth of chest, well-muscled with strong topline to slightly sloping croup, balanced angulation front and rear. Took time to settle on the move but covered the ground well from the side and straight out and back. 2. Fletcher's Azgard Nimbus, 9 months, grey & white, brown eyes. Longer in loin than 1 with again a stronger head than I would like for his age. A fair bit of growing still to do. Good reach of neck, well laid-back shoulder, good depth of chest, not as well muscled as 1, balanced angulation front and rear. Another giving his handler a hard time but when settled covered the ground well.
JD (1) 1. Fletcher's Azgard Nimbus - as above but movement improved in this class as both dog and handler were more relaxed.
PGD (9,3) 1. Robinson's Frostynights Bloodraven, 2 year-old, black & white, bi-eyed. Foxy head, a little tight in his neck but correct length, well laid-back shoulder, good depth of chest, strong, level topline, slightly sloping croup with well-set tail, well-muscled and covered the ground with ease. 2. Robertson's Chatanika's Here Be Dragons, 2 year old, white, brown eyes. Foxy head, well laid-back shoulder, good depth of chest, strong, level topline, slightly sloping croup with well-set tail, well-muscled but a bit erratic on the move. 3. Ashcroft's Amical Smile N' Wave For Zanjelic.
LD (5) 1. Sargent's Hushwing Wezztlee With Keriquel, 19 months, black & white, brown eyes. At the top end of the height range. Everything where it should be. Classic head, good reach of neck, well laid-back shoulder, good depth of chest, well-muscled with strong level topline to slightly sloping croup with well-set tail, balanced angulation front and rear. Took time to settle but when he did he powered round the ring showing correct extension of the head and neck with effortless reach and drive and absolutely straight out and back. In excellent coat and condition. One to take home. Delighted to award him CC and BOB. 2. Robertson's Wild Whistler. 6 year old, grey & white, brown eyes. Foxy head, well laid-back shoulder, good depth of chest, strong, level topline, slightly sloping croup with well-set tail, well-muscled but moving a little wide at the front today. 3. Robinson's Charoite Skookum Blend.
OD (9) 1. Biddlecombe's Korsvigs Cooper At Tsaritsa, 5 year old piebald, brown eyes. Again everything where it should be. Medium sized boy, compact in body but totally balanced. Masculine yet correct head, balanced front and rear angulation, well laid-back shoulder to level topline with nicely sloping croup to well-set tail. Made his handler work hard today however once settled showing excellent reach and drive and straight coming and going. In good coat and condition. Another to take home. Very pleased to award RCC. 2. Grisbrooke's Ch Azgard Glock, 3 year old grey & white, brown eyes. Longer in the loin than 1 but balanced front and rear angulation, well laid-back shoulder to level topline and slightly sloping croup. Showing again excellent reach and drive and straight on the move just preferred head of 1. 3. Davis's Amical Morticon.
VD (4,3) 1. Sutherland's Ch Icynight's Uigeadail - 9 year old, black & white, brown eyes. Left a lot of his coat at home. At the top end of the height range. Classic head, good front angulation and depth of chest. Topline level to slightly sloping croup. A bit high in the hock which affected rear movement.
PB (5,1) 1. John's Azgard Kapma For Alepenkye, 9 month old, grey & white, brown eyes. Pretty feminine head with mischievous expression. Front pastern angulation good but not as yet followed through in the shoulder, this will come. Good height to length ration and well angulated rear. Thoroughly enjoying her day out and made her handler work. Look forward to seeing her mature. 2. Brown's Polarcreek Taiya, 7 month old, grey & white, brown eyes. Pretty head but ears a little wide. Upright in the pasterns with quite a lot of chest in front of the shoulders but well angulated rear. Movement loose due to age and a bit erratic due to inexperience of handler. 3. Cunningham's Winterblaze's Goingloopy.
JB (7,2) 1. Goodwin's Valkyrie Siwash Legend (Imp), 13 months, black & white bi-eyes. At the smaller end of the height range but everything in balance. In full coat. Feminine head although appears a little small due to abundance of coat and ears a little wide. Still a bit of growing to do so length to height not quite as it should be. Well angulated front and rear, slightly sloping croup to well-set tail. Covered the ground showing reach and drive appropriate to her size. Straight coming and going. 2. John's Azgard Kapma For Alepenkye - as above. 3. Brown's Deshka's Cassiar Dyr For Polarcreek.
PGB (11,3) 1. Shelford's Snowtrekka Enchantress - 4 year old, grey & white, brown eyes. At the top end of the height range. Head a bit heavy for a bitch and ears wide. Fullness of coat giving the appearance of being a bit heavy in the chest. Well angulated front and rear, level topline to nicely sloping croup with well-set tails. Showing good reach and drive on the move and straight out and back. 2. Seaman's Sasoolka Baobhan Sith. 2 year old, piebald, brown eyes. Longer in the body than 1. Rounder in head with wider ear set. Balanced angulation front and rear, level topline with nicely sloping croup. Not quite the ground coverage of 1 but sound and straight. 3. Biddlecombe's Keriquel Cloudlight At Tsaritsa.
LB (10,5) 1. McInnes Hushwing Happy Feet At Inneska JW. 2 year old, wolf grey & white, blue eyes. Medium sized, compact bitch in full coat and good condition. Feminine head with good reach of neck to well laid-back shoulder. Good depth of chest. Correct and balanced front and rear angulation despite rear markings giving the appearance of being straight. Strong level topline to slightly sloping croup and well-set tail. Showing good extension of head and neck and effortless reach and drive. Straight out and back. One to take home. Pushed hard for CC but just not quite the sparkle in the challenge possibly down to the travelling and the heat. Delighted to award RCC. 2. Smith's Amical Kapri, 4 year old, white, brown eyes. Pretty feminine head, taller more rangy bitch than 1 but height to length correct and well balanced angulation front and rear. Not quite the extension of 1 on the move but covered the ground showing good reach and drive. Straight out and back. 3. Bryson's Inukshuk Kunik O'ullaktut.
OB (5,1) 1. Sargent's Keriquel Aqualight - 2 year old, grey & white, bi and part- eyed. Medium sized, compact bitch in good coat and condition. Head appears a little snippy due to markings but is not. Good reach of neck to well laid-back shoulder. Good depth of chest. Correct and balanced front and rear angulation. Strong level topline to slightly sloping croup and well-set tail. Showing good extension of head and neck and effortless reach and drive. Straight out and back. A little more sparkle in the challenge. Delighted to award CC which I was later informed is her third. 2. Smith's Amical Snow White, 6 year old, white, brown eyes. Taller more rangy bitch than 1 but another showing correct height to length ratio. Again, well laid-back shoulder and good front and rear angulation. Level topline to nicely sloping croup with well-set tail. Not quite covering the ground of 1 but showing good reach and drive and straight out and back. 3. Biddlecombe's Tsaritsa's Tsassou.
VB (7,1) 1. Cruden's Amical Juliet For Shamsky - 7 year old, white, brown eyes. Medium sized bitch with feminine head and good reach of neck. Well angulated front and rear with strong level topline to nicely sloping croup and well-set tail. Covered the ground well and straight out and back. In good coat and condition. Would prefer a little more extension of head and neck on the move. 2. Shaw's Norste Gazelle - 8 year old, white, brown eyes. Medium sized bitch in full coat. More compact than 1 with fullness of coat giving the appearance of being a little stuffy in the neck which she is not. Well laid-back shoulder with good front angulation, topline dipping slightly on the move as she was giving her handler a hard time and rushing. Nicely sloping croup and well-set tail. 3. Norman's Ch Skimarque Silver Sno Star
