Many thanks to the Committee for their kind invitation to judge at Crufts and to all those who entered, thank you for such an outstanding quality entry of dogs and bitches, the vast majority shown in impeccable condition which is no easy task in during the working season and is a real credit to all their owners. It is concerning to find a significant number of exhibits with dental defects, something we need to be mindful of for the future. In many classes there were too many quality dogs to give them all cards - especially the higher classes. I was delighted with all my top winners and it is such a tribute to our breed that they are still fit enough to be shown in veteran classes and from there go on to win the tickets. Our BOB winner looked stunning in the big ring in the group and moved with the drive and grace of a dog half his age. Well done to everyone who was placed on the day! G/w make with pleasing head, shade longer body proportions than first and second, moved well round the ring. GCD (5) 1 Allen's Arcticskies Leading Light. As a replacement judge I wish to thank all the exhibitors for bringing their dogs on the day and for the sporting way in which my decisions were accepted. My recorder has picked up all the background noise from the hall and very little of what I said so unfortunately I am working from mostly memory so please forgive the brevity of the reports. As seems to always be the case with our breed there were more quality bitches than dogs. I felt spoiled for choice with the girls. I found more then a few level bites so this needs to be considered when breeding I think. Lots of dogs between coats, at this time of year its to be expected but some carried it better than others.

With a three-digit entry, beautiful day and showgrounds, and most importantly - some very handsome dogs and great handlers, the Southern Counties Canine Association Championship show was a wonderful opportunity for me to have the best of time. Thank you everyone, show personnel, breeders, owners and handlers. When I compare the dogs I've judged in this show with the ones I saw some thirty years ago in the UK I must say the improvement is very clear. Obviously, there are dogs of world class quality in the UK today, and judging by what I've seen and heard there are also some very knowledgeable breeders and handlers. Keep up with the good work, producing and exhibiting healthy, functional beautiful ambassadors of the breed. It is important for me to emphasize: there is only one breed standard. There are no types in the breed, nor there are varieties, although there may be, and should be, a range of styles within the standard. All dogs exhibited must be true to the standard. Having said that, please also remember that function and health are of prime importance in any breed, all the more so in our breed, the Siberian Husky.

Not having his favourite day of his short life so far, he represents little Mr Raw with so much more to come, chiselling needs to develop on foreface, good ears, bi-eyed, close coat, balanced but open angulation carrying his tail a touch tightly on the day.
JD (6) Nice class, remember, correct exercise creates correct muscling and therefore correct movement. Siberians should have long flat muscles not round hard ball type, as this will affect movement and ultimately placings. 1 Wakker's Shaytaan's Doctor Watson At Ceannabeinne. Absolutely owned the ring in the class, 17 months old, out of coat, precise mover with a lovely shoulder, good tail set, ground covering gait, head a tad plain, good neck, head shape and ear, slightly shy, ok bone, good feet, nice pasterns. Absolutely blew his chances in the challenge as handler just appeared to give up which was a shame. 2 Williams' Sibersong's Dark Sovereign For Salazka (Imp USA). Another top notch young man, unlucky to meet first. Very attractive boy just not as rangey so more concise on move. Slightly narrow through chest however that will come, interested expression, lovely eye, very neat overall package showed really well 3 Pike's Slaanesh Fat Albert.
PGD (5, 2) Close class. 1 Keen's Nashanessen's Brockton. Overall I liked his length of stride caused by his length of body, good steady lad, maturing nicely, good angles, well off for bone, ears a touch wide on attractive head with good expression, not sure he really gets showing. 2 Grisbrooke's Azgard Spindrift. What a beautiful head this chap has, he is going to be unstoppable once he gets another season of working under his belt to aid his maturity and realises exactly what he needs to do to wow the judges in the ring, balanced body, well handled, just still a touch bemused by the proceedings 3 Lightfoot's Icebex Tolya Of Footlite. Another smart young male, just needs to concentrate more on move, still very raw, striking head, good overall size, touch tight through the tail.
LD (5) Nice class. 1 Keen's Nashanessen's Prospect. Lovely red with blue eyes which appear a touch round at times. Solid little chap, dependable and true, calm, collected and workmanlike he eats up the ground effortlessly never putting a foot wrong. Good bone, feet, condition and muscling 2 Pickervance's Azgard Bollinger. Lovely boy, beautiful head, good weight and condition, well muscled. Completely disadvantaged by being rushed which was unfortunate, gave him a number of chances, however, he would much rather be running in harness than strutting around a ring today 3 John's Arcticbaikal Black Wizard. Persevered in the class and consistently got better on the move whilst others didn't, black and white lad, reminded me of some lovely long dead dogs, pretty head, good ear, substantial but not fat body, light footed and effortless gait, well handled.
OD (7, 3) Super class. 1 Hannam's Ch Charoite Raven's Brew. This boy just gets better and better, nearly a veteran he totally belies his age, strong body, good angulation, ground eating stride, rock solid condition, interested expression, no nonsense, no frills, all male. Dog I would most like to run, CC, his fourth. 2 Grisbrooke's Ch Azgard Glock. BPISS last time I judged, he has gone from strength to strength. Balanced angulation, excellent front, happy friendly chap, interested expression, ground covering gait, well handled, a joy to judge RCC 3 Sutherland's Ch Icynights Uigeadail. A worthy recent Champion, he is on such a roll at present, just unlucky to meet two ground covering males in great condition. Veteran but not looking his age, lovely eye and ear, appeared very pleased with himself and quite raced around the ring.
PB (6, 3) Very promising class, all lovely babies, just a bit overawed by grass and noise etc. 1 Bowering & Evans' Penkhala's Kaska. BPIB. This little madam won on consistency of movement, beautiful head and neck, (needs to be brought forward on stand to disguise front straightening so much) nice tail easy mover, narrow through front at present, ok for weight, tight feet, good pasterns, big ears 2 March's Trailhunters Fox Tor. Lost class on movement, which was a shame, she was just unsettled and uncontrolled. Lovely head with fabulous marking, balanced front and rear, fine bone, lovely eyes, high set ears, nice coat, tail etc just over enjoying her day out 3 Jones & Mihulka's Shaytaan's Upyours At Icynights (Imp) TAF NAF. At just 6 months she really is tiny, cute head with sweet expression, smartly handled.
JB (6, 1) Nice class. 1 Norman's Skimarque Margarita. Fabulous 15 month old red, absolutely eats the ground on the move, great reach and drive. Lovely colour and condition although out of coat, well handled, pretty head and expression, I loved her, just needs to tighten feet as discussed after. Absolutely owned the class 2 March's Janskcoo Echoes In Eternity. Again really liked this 13 month grey, but she was so nervous and handling spoilt it for her. Needs to grow in confidence on the move, lovely angles, well muscled 3 Wakeling's Inukshuk O'blue Nuuttuittuq. Small package put together nicely, good front, tight feet, ultimately needs more bone, well handled and full of joy.
PGB (12, 3) Varied class. 1 Shelford's A Joy Av Vargevass (Imp). 23 months and is she coming on a treat. Everything there, lovely head, inquisitive expression, lovely muscle, big girl, but feminine, moves with such rhythm, really liked her, put in an unstoppable performance RCC. 2 March's Trailhunters Kalisibella. Another one who is coming on a treat, lovely expression good ears ok front moved well (showed herself!) Good loin, well muscled and presented 3 Spruce's Mysticwolf Maicoh. Really liked her when I went over her, well constructed, ok head with white blaze, very sound mover, good easy gait, touch narrow through front still.
LB (7, 2) Nice class. 1 Sargent's Keriquel Aqualight. 22 months, lovely true mover, love her expression & neatness of movement, workmanlike and could go all day, coming out of coat, bi-eyed, good ears, sympathetically handled, good front and tight feet. Sadly blew her chances in the challenge. 2 Wakker's Icynights Sparkle In The Mist At Ceannabeinne. Has almost matured too much and looked a touch matronly, still moves well, covering lots of ground, well handled. 3 Norman's Skimarque Snofall Lacie touch short on leg, lovely condition, ok mover, good reach and drive, little sweetheart her eye is a bit messy at present which spoilt the complete picture.
OB (9, 1) Nice class. 1 Cruden & Kaye's Amical Juliet For Shamsky OMG! Oh My God, she never put a foot wrong and looked amazing. Beautiful head piece, mature body, good coat, Ok tail, lovely chest, moved consistently with such power and drive. Revelled in the well sized ring. Owned the day. Loved her. CC, BOB. 2 Bowering & Evans' Ch Penkhala's Kyra. Tiny pocket, rocket, so lovely, ate up the ground, would love a harder finish to her overall condition, unlucky to meet first, another who excelled in the lovely grass ring 3 Wakeling's Klewagin Chaska. 9 year old white who just steadily showed and showed and showed, steadily covering ground every time the class moved, well put together, neat overall package, well handled
A very nice 'working' entry that was a pleasure to judge. Movement was mostly sound throughout with entries exhibiting good reach and drive to cover the ground efficiently and effortlessly. Front and rear angulation was generally excellent (not a straight shoulder in sight!), and dogs were shown in well muscled condition; neither carrying any excess weight nor underweight either. Heads were slightly disappointing however, nothing particularly blocky or jowly, but few with what I consider to be a nice classic head. Bitches, on the whole, had better heads. I know 'they don't run with their heads' but nevertheless a nice typical head is an important characteristic of the breed and can only improve a good dog. There were also a number of entries with a 'level bite', not a serious fault but obviously becoming more prevalent in the breed and perhaps just needs monitoring.
MPD (1) 1 Sargent's Hushwing Wezztlee With Keriquel. Quite a promising grey/white 7 month old. Still a little leggy but moving soundly and covering plenty of ground. First and foremost thanks to my stewards - Mrs L Crane and Mr M Hernandez, who did a great job in keeping me on time and ensured a smooth running of the ring. Windsor is probably one of my favourite shows, so I felt honoured to have been invited to judge our breed here. The weather certainly didn't disappoint with the sun shining down on us, thankfully though the ring provided adequate shade for the dogs to stand while waiting to be seen. Observing outside of the ring is certainly very different to being in the ring with hands on. I can honestly say, there were a few chosen today which I may not have considered from the sidelines. I saw some interesting ranges of movement, from wide, to some that appeared to not be single tracking, whether this was down to the ground in the ring it's hard to say, but I do hope it's not what we have to come in the future for the breed. However, I was lucky to have many in the ring that often made decisions hard and was a close call between placing. Thank you to all those who took the time to enter under me, I was pleased to have such a good entry for my first Championship appointment and enjoyed my day, sadly not every dog can be placed, but win or lose you will always take the best dog home... your own.
VD/B (3) 1 Beirne's Penkhalas Nashoba. DCC, Res BOB and BV. A really handsome boy who's matured gracefully and improved with age. Nicely balanced front to rear, foxy head, although doesn't always get his ears up, level topline. Moved effortlessly round the ring, he well deserved this first place with good reach and drive for a more mature male. 2 Heaton's Deshka Echo Dyr. Sweet feminine bitch, well proportioned, looked nice on the stand and movement towards you singled tracked, however, lacked drive in the rear on the day, hence why lost out to first. 3 Norman's Skimarque Silver Sno Queen ShCM. Lovely foxy head, this lady looks like she was and still can be cheeky.
MPD (4) 1 Beirne's Penkhalas Itaska. An adorable young man who's full of character and will melt the hearts of many I am sure. An interesting colour to judge as can be deceptive, nicely proportioned, has still yet to learn his ring etiquette, keeping his handler on their toes, but settled well on the move, making it look effortless. One to watch for the future, both in the ring and on the trail. 2 Sargent's Hushwing Wezztlee With Keriquel. A nicely proportioned boy, masculine yet young face and good ear set. Good on the stand, at the moment a little loose on the move but should come together as he matures. 3 Platts' Nabeyo's Hansom Bob. A very leggy chap, needs lots of work at the moment but was his first show, will be interested to see how he comes on.
PD (5, 1) 1 Beirne's Penkhalas Itaska. 2 Sargent's Hushwing Wezztlee With Keriquel. 3 Heart's Zawkkast's Scrappy. Nice foxy head, lovely boy, lost out to first and second on the move. JD (2) 1 Cooper's Janskoo's Fortitude. Smaller boy, nice foxy head with a happy expression, nice angulations, good level topline. Well proportioned and sound on the move. 2 Williams' Sibersong's Dark Sovereign For Salazka (Imp USA). This young man was certainly full of spirit today, brought a smile to my face but hard work for his handler, who managed well. Nice on the move, just not as good as first.
YD (4) 1 Cooper's Janskoo's Fortitude. More settled and even better on the move. 2 Wakker's Shaytaan's Doctor Watson At Ceannabeinne (Imp Can). Deceiving being white, so definitely one to get your hands on, nice masculine head with good ear set. Unsettled on the move, but a very happy boy, would like to see him when he's matured a little more. 3 Aguilera's Sulaco Hudson. Nice black and white boy, little wide in the front movement at the moment, but given practice and time will improve.
PGD (3) 1 Biddlecombe's Snoqualmie Solar Tswift At Tsaritsa. Lovely foxy head, sweet expression yet still masculine. Good overall balance and construction, nicely muscled. Good reach and positive on the move, even in the heat of the day. 2 Heart's Arctictrek's Ralph Revels At Zawkkast. Again another one that you need to get your hands on to appreciate. Nicely put together in all aspects, excellent topline, only marginally lost out to first. 3 Yerrill's Alepenkye Fruit Loops. Nice black and white boy, took a little while to settle into the move with a tendency to copy his handler, but once settled moved nicely. Lost out to first and second due to an overshot jaw.
LD (5, 2) 1 Davis' Amical Morticon JW ShCM. Res DCC. A lovely boy who I have admired from outside of the ring and watched with interest. A well balanced boy from front to rear. Well handled, light on his feet as he moved effortlessly round the ring. 2 Yerrill's Alepenkye Fruit Loops. 3 Downey's Snoqualmie Jupiter Nakanni. Nice boy with good angulation, was a little loose on the out and back, narrowly missed out to second.
OD (8, 4) 1 Biddlecombe's Korsvigs Cooper At Tsaritsa. Evenly balanced front to rear, good level topline, good reach of neck. Beautifully presented with good muscle. Full of character and mischief, a wriggle on the stand at times, but moved effortlessly round the ring. 2 Redwood's Rigrunner Jubilee Flotilla. More compact than first, not one I would have thought I would have placed prior to getting my hands on him. He left his clothes behind today, but well put together, with nice movement. 3 Platt's Rykalov's Sparks At Wightflight. Lovely masculine boy, close call between second and third.
GCD/B (1) 1 Allen's Arcticskies Leading Light. Slightly heavier set compact boy. Had impeccable manners and well behaved, who clearly loved his day out.
MPB (6) 1 Bowden & Hughes' Arctictrek B'witched At Staggan NAF. A feminine young lady, lovely head and nice conformation. Had to be patient with the move, but only to be expected in one so young, when she did though she moved soundly. A really nice typical bitch, and handled well. 2 Blackburn's Iceagepaws Peaches. A very sweet little girl, foxy head but not quite got the hang of her ears yet but will get there. Good on the stand, nice fluid movement when she paid attention. 3 Wakker's Shaytaan's Ooermissus At Ceannabeinne (Imp Can) TAF. A very sweet little girl, a very young six months, am looking forward to seeing how she gradually matures and pulls everything together.
PB (4) 1 March's Trailhunters Fox Tor. Such a sweet young lady with lovely head and full of fun. Nicely turned out, with sound movement. 2 Blackburn's Iceagepaws Peaches. 3 Blackburn's Iceagepaws Francine. Pretty face, well proportioned, not as good on the move as first and second.
JB (8, 3) 1 Cooper's Janskcoo's Strength N'honour. Res BCC. Everything you could want in a junior Bitch. A feminine, foxy confident young girl, who made the ring her own. Nothing loose or uncontrolled, is sure to have a promising future ahead of her. Reluctant to give such a young dog a Reserve CC, but was well deserved. 2 Downey's Janskoo's Now We Are Free For Snoqualmie. Well constructed grey bitch, a little nervous, but settled on the move. Only after judging I discovered she was litter sister to first. 3 March's Janscoo Echoes In Eternity NAF. Similar to second, lovely foxy head, just didn't move as well as first and second. Nothing like consistency as litter sister to first and second.
YB (11) 1 Cooper's Janskcoo's Strength N'honour. Res BCC. 2 Jones & Mihulka's Shaytaan's Devil's Dust At Icynights (Imp). A lovely grey and white bitch, tall for her age. Well proportioned, feminine head with good ear set. Moved well on the around and gait. 3 Sargent's Keriquel Aqualight. Nice girl, lovely on the stand, just not as strong on the move as first and second.
PGB (11, 3) 1 Smith's Amical Kapri. Another one to get your hands on, as colour can be misleading, nicely constructed bitch with a pretty face and nice expression. Moved fluidly around the ring, and nice on the stand. 2 Allan & Barry's Azgard Tuula. Slightly more compact than first, but again very sound on the move. Well constructed front and rear. 3 Biddlecombe's Forstals Tsavanti At Tsaritsa. Very sweet girl and full of mischief, moved nicely, just not as good as first and second.
LB (6) 1 Downey & Last's Snoqualmie Khione. Lovely alert expression and foxy head, good angulation. Well handled with good reach and drive, well deserved win in a strong class. 2 Brown's Sassicaia's Alaskan Hotspot For Polarcreek. Finer bitch than first, particularly to her head, giving her a very feminine look. Very typical of the breed lost out only on movement on the day. 3 Wakker's Icynights Sparkle In The Mist At Ceannabeinne. Pretty black and white bitch, little longer in the body than second, moved nicely, just not as good as second on the day.
OB (6, 1) 1 Jones & Mihulka's Icynights Too Hot To Handle JW. BCC and BOB. Such a lovely black and white quality bitch. Beautifully angulated, nicely muscled and in excellent condition, today was her day and she was showing her socks off. Handled well, she made full use of the ring, floating effortlessly. Fully deserved the BCC and BOB. 2 Robinson's Rigrunner Diamond Jubilee. Lovely pretty foxy head, well built and nicely muscled. Good front and rear angulations, well proportioned. Moved nicely, but just not as sound as first. 3 Williams' Salazka's Toke. Finer bitch than first and second, a sweet face, close call between her and second.
PD (7) 1, Allen, Siberiadrift Keep The Love For Zimavlk, PB & PG4, this young man is so well balanced in head shape and topline. He stands true front & rear & movement is so smooth and quick, keeping his topline. What a shame that thus beautiful breed is in the state that it is. Many with roach backs, too deep in chest, oversize, ten to two fronts, short muzzles not balanced to the skull, ears too far apart, big, round eyes and heavy heads apart from unsoundness and just busy legs without correct reach and drive. We didn't have the skeletal dogs today but I still think that the breed is in a sorry state, breeders need to take off the rose coloured spectacles, read and compare your dogs to the breed standard, be honest with yourselves and produce some top quality dogs.

What a pleasure it was for me to be judging this lovely breed again. My thanks go to my steward who did an excellent and efficient job which is so helpful when judging. Special thanks must go to all the exhibitors who in a lot of cases travelled miles to present their dogs to me. In all cases presentation was excellent and the effort was to be seen by all. Overall I felt the dogs moved better than the bitches, with obvious exceptions, but apart from a number who had left their coats behind, all the dogs were in good harsh condition and carried excellent hard muscling. One or two exceptions, especially in the bitches, were in my opinion very underweight.
PD (6,1) 1. Sutton and Kents' Lyfearon Blazing Heart. 8 month old grey and white with striking blue eyes. Well grown for his age with level topline and strong driving movement. Strong head with nice shaped ears and good pigment. Well presented and shown and one I feel will go on to reach the top. BP and RDCC. 2. Allens' SiberiaDrift Keep the Love For Zimavolk. Very nice well grown red and white puppy in excellent harsh coat. Excellent head, earset and pigmentation. Looked well when standing but lost to winner on sloppier movement which will tighten up as he gets older. Will do well in the future. 3. Christies' Siberinda Winter Bear.

Pressed winner very hard and on another day would have won. Had all the correct attributes to go on to better things. Gave me the impression of a laid back character of which nothing would upset him. Maybe a little more weight would not be a bad thing. 3. Houstons' Rajarani Nikolai.

Nice to see how much movement has improved in the breed, but some heads are becoming blocky and round eyes detract from that finely chiselled appearance.
